Independent Living

To live independently is to goal of most individuals with or without disabilities.  In some cases, living independently is a simple transition, in other cases it takes a lot of planning and support to accomplish this goal.  Below you will see some of the many agencies and organizations whose purpose is to help individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible.

The Center for Independent Living (CIL)

This CIL strives through advocacy and collective action to remove physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent People with Disabilities (PwD) from exercising their rights, achieving personal independence, and participating fully in the life of the community.  Programs, services and trainings provided by this CIL teach consumers to take responsibility for their own abilities to live independently.

*Living Well With a Disability

Living Well With A Disability is a free resource that is available to individuals with any type of disability, living in certain counties of Pennsylvania. By calling our Living Well With A Disability hotline (1-877-TO-LIV-WELL), you will be connected with a qualified Living Well specialist who will conduct a survey that focuses on all aspects of your life. The Living Well specialist will assist you with identifying your needs and goals, and developing a plan for meeting them.

Merakey is a non-profit provider of developmental, behavioral health, and education services. More than 8,000 employees provide support to nearly 40,000 individuals and families throughout 12 states across the country each year.

*Pacer Center Housing Project 

PACER Center enhances the quality of life and expands opportunities for children, youth, and young adults with all disabilities and their families so each person can reach his or her highest potential. PACER operates on the principles of parents helping parents, supporting families, promoting a safe environment for all children, and working in collaboration with others.

*Port Authority Access Transit 

ACCESS is door-to-door, advance reservation, shared–ride transportation provided throughout Allegheny County and to destinations in adjoining counties within 1.5 miles of the Allegheny County line. As a coordinator of paratransit service throughout Allegheny County, ACCESS offers several special discount programs for individual riders, as well as providing service for groups, human service agencies and other organizations that purchase transportation for their clients. ACCESS is also open to the general public at full fare rates.

Westmoreland County Housing Authority

Established in 1941, Westmoreland County Housing Authority (WCHA) is celebrating 75 years of providing safe, affordable housing for families and seniors througout Westmoreland County. The legacy of providing save affordable housing continues through 2016.

Westmoreland Transit Authority 

Paratransit, often referred to as “Shared-Ride,” is operated during limited hours and specific travel areas. There is a required application and reservation process.

This service is a shared-ride program. You may be required to share a vehicle with other passengers and may not be taken directly from your origin to your destination in order to accommodate the needs of other passengers.​ Call 1-800-242-2706
